Chapter 11: Rowan

The soft rays of morning light peeked over the horizon as I made my way towards Adeline's den. The scent of her heat hit me full force. It was different this morning; more potent. I halted, my breath hitching as my instincts went into overdrive.

My duty was clear; stand guard, ensure her safety. But her scent...it was intoxicating, like a siren's call. It tugged at something primal within me, an urge to claim, to possess. I was the youngest among the alphas, the least experienced. Kael and Zane might have had better control over their instincts, but my struggle felt raw, intense, nearly impossible to suppress.

"Rowan," Adeline's voice floated from within the den, soft but strained. "Are you okay?"

Her question jerked me out of my inner turmoil. "Yeah, I'm fine," I managed to croak out, but we both knew it was a lie. Taking a deep breath, I decided to do what I'd never done before—open up about my struggle. "Actually, no," I corrected myself. "I'm not fine, Adeline."

There was a brief silence from within the den. "Tell me, Rowan," she urged. "I want to understand."

So, I told her. I let the words spill out, my voice shaky but determined. "It's just... your scent. It's overwhelming. I've never felt this... this urge before, and it's driving me crazy. I'm supposed to protect you, but all I can think of is... is how much I want..."

I didn't finish the sentence, but I didn't need to. I'd laid bare my most primal instincts, my most profound struggles. I was a young alpha wrestling with urges that threatened to overwhelm me, battling to maintain control when everything within me demanded otherwise.

The silence was deafening. I had just opened a part of myself, a side I hadn't fully explored until now. It was fiercely protective, caring, yet potent with desire. The realization hit me like a bolt of lightning, leaving me surprised, confused.

My heart hammered in my chest as I awaited her response. But all she said was a quiet, "I understand, Rowan," and those words... they meant more than any other.

As the morning drew on, my thoughts were an odd mixture of turmoil and calm. I was still wrestling with the potent pull towards Adeline, but there was a newfound determination within me. I would control this; I would ensure her safety, even if it was the last thing I did.

I started patrolling the area more frequently, ensuring no unwanted alphas intruded upon her privacy. I put my senses to work, picking up on every little sound, every scent that seemed out of place. The task was arduous, testing my limits, but with every passing moment, I felt a maturity I hadn't noticed in myself before. I wasn't just the youngest alpha anymore; I was a man willing to go to any length to protect the woman he cared for.

In the face of the intense situation, my usual jovial side decided to make an appearance. I could see the confusion in Adeline's eyes as I cracked a joke about a squirrel who thought it could take on an alpha.
